MANUFACTURER SINCE 1986
Expanded metal, a versatile and widely used material, has a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. The development of expanded metal involves various innovations and applications across different industries.

What Is Expanded Metal?

Expanded metal is a sheet or plate that has been cut and stretched into a mesh structure. When the metal is stretched, it creates a mesh with diamond-shaped spaces – although there are many other patterns you can create as well. There are many different types of metal that can be expanded, including stainless steel, hot rolled steel, cold rolled steel, aluminum, and many more.

There are two types of mesh patterns: staggered ones (providing the most open areas) and straight ones (with all rows and columns aligned). As the amount of open area in expanded metal determines how much air, water and light can pass through, the proportion of open area will vary depending on the intended application of the expanded metal.

Benefits of Expanded Metal

The following are some benefits of using expanded metal:

1.Versatility

Expanded metal is an incredibly versatile material that can be adapted to a wide array of applications. Its flexibility makes it suitable for uses in industries such as construction, architecture, manufacturing, and security.

2.Weight Reduction

Compared to solid metal sheets, expanded metal provides substantial weight reduction while maintaining structural integrity. This feature is particularly advantageous in applications where weight is a critical factor, such as in automotive and aerospace industries.

3.Strength and Rigidity

The process of expanding metal creates a pattern that enhances its strength and rigidity. This makes expanded metal a durable and reliable choice for applications requiring structural support, such as walkways, catwalks, and safety barriers.

4.Ventilation and Visibility

The open design of expanded metal allows for excellent ventilation and visibility. This makes it ideal for applications like screens, filters, and protective barriers, where airflow and visibility are essential.

5.Cost-Effectiveness

Expanded metal is often more cost-effective than other materials with similar strength characteristics. Its efficient use of material during the manufacturing process contributes to its affordability, making it a practical choice for various projects.

6.Customizable Patterns

Expanded metal comes in a variety of patterns, allowing for customization based on specific needs and aesthetic preferences. This feature makes it suitable for architectural applications, where designers can incorporate unique patterns for decorative purposes.

7.Security and Safety

The strength and durability of expanded metal make it a popular choice for security applications, such as fencing, grilles, and machine guards. Its design can act as a deterrent, providing both security and safety in different settings.

8.Ease of Fabrication

Expanded metal is easy to fabricate, cut, and shape, allowing for efficient integration into various projects. This ease of fabrication enhances its usability in diverse applications, saving time and resources during installation.

9.Corrosion Resistance

Depending on the material used (such as stainless steel or aluminum), expanded metal can offer excellent corrosion resistance. This makes it suitable for outdoor applications where exposure to harsh weather conditions is a concern.

10.Sustainable Material

Expanded metal is a sustainable option as it optimizes material usage during the manufacturing process. Its longevity, recyclability, and energy-efficient production contribute to its eco-friendly profile.

How Is Expanded Metal Made?

expanded metal manufacturing process

Expanded metal mesh is crafted from solid sheets or coils of various materials, including stainless steel, aluminum, carbon steel, or other alloys that undergo an expansion process.

There are different thicknesses of metal that can be used for different purposes, and different mesh patterns can also be chosen based on the intended application. LWD (Long Way Diamond) and SWD (Short Way Diamond) are commonly used to indicate the desired length and width of the diamond shaped mesh holes, respectively.

The manufacturing process involves feeding the sheets or coils into an expanding machine equipped with precision dies comprising upper and lower blades. Through a meticulous operation of slitting and stretching, the metal undergoes a transformation illustrated in the diagram. This process ensures efficient use of material without any wastage.

As the sheets or coils pass through the expanding machine, the metal is precisely cut and stretched in a single operation. Subsequently, the material is sheared and stretched into a specific pattern, resulting in uniformly sized openings. In the final product, these openings form a mesh that allows the free flow of air, sound, liquid, and heat while creating an effective barrier against large solid objects or human bodies.

Remarkably, the metal sheet can be expanded up to ten times its original width, resulting in a final product that is lighter per meter and stronger per kilogram than the original sheet. Notably, no material is lost during the manufacturing process.

The integrity of the expanded metal mesh is reinforced by its robust material properties, preventing unraveling even if the finished sheet is cut at one or more points. This resilience is attributed to the remaining strand intersections that effectively hold the sheet together, showcasing the durability and strength inherent in expanded metal mesh.

Types of Expanded Metal

The most common types of expanded metal are:

Standard Expanded Metal

Standard expanded metal is extremely versatile and economical. It comes in a variety of gauges and opening sizes. It’s often used as a rigid, raised, slip-resistant surface. Its bonds and strands are arranged uniformly. As a result, it is stronger and rigider while allowing maximum air flow.

Flattened Expanded Metal

The flattened expanded metal is produced by cold rolling expanded metal. It is used when a smooth surface is required. The flattening process generally increases the sheet’s length by 5%.

Hexagonal Expanded Metal

Unlike diamond-shaped expanded metal, hexagonal expanded metal has hexagonal openings. Its hexagonal shape adds strength to the metal while allowing air, light, heat, sound, and liquid to pass through. Whenever the metal is heavily expanded, hexagonal openings are preferred over diamond openings.

Architectural Expanded Metal

The diamond pattern in architectural expanded metal is enhanced by architectural features. The result is a design that is good for aesthetics, increases security and privacy, and improves ventilation. It can be used for both decorative and functional purposes.

Micro Expanded Metal

A micro expanded metal is defined as a sheet of light gauge metal with small openings in it. These openings can be standard, flattened, hexagonal, or square. Micro expanded metal has many uses, but is especially well-suited to filters.

Applications of Expanded Metals

Expanded metals, with their unique characteristics, find optimal applications across a wide range of industries. Here are some key areas where expanded metals excel:
