Did you know that slips and trips are the most common cause of injury at work?

Findings reported by HSE* (Health and Safety Executive), the independent health and safety regulator, show that on average, slips and trips cause over a third of all major injuries and over half of all reported injuries to members of the public in workplaces where there is public access, such as shops and restaurants.

In hazardous environments such as offshore platforms, factories and petrochemical facilities, poor grip on walkways – which are often exposed to spills or the elements – can endanger life.

To test the slip resistance of a walkway there are typically two methods using standard scientific testing equipment, the first being using a surface microroughness meter which has been shown by HSL (Health and Safety Laboratory) scientists to be a useful indicator of the slip resistance of a surface in wet conditions. The other method is conducted using a pendulum – and is the HSE’s preferred method of testing.

The pendulum method is based on a swinging imitation heel (using a standardised rubber soling sample), which sweeps over a set area of flooring in a controlled manner. The slipperiness of the flooring has a direct and measurable effect on the pendulum test value (PTV) given. The slip potential classification ranges from 0-24 PTV signalling a high slip potential, through to values of 25-35 PTV indicating a moderate slip potential and finally values of 36+ PTV shows surfaces with a low slip potential. For instances where the surface is in a hazardous environment a 36+ PTV value would be necessary to maintain health and safety standards.

It may be that you are familiar with the standard anti-slip grating solution, such as mesh grating or pultruded grating, but do you know about expanded metal mesh as an anti-slip surface option?

Understanding Expanded Metal

Expanded metal is a versatile and innovative material that finds its application in various industries due to its unique characteristics and benefits. It is a metal sheet that has been cut and stretched to create a pattern of openings, resulting in a mesh-like structure with an array of advantageous properties. This article delves into the manufacturing process, key properties, and applications of expanded metal, shedding light on its significance in different sectors.

Manufacturing Process

Expanded metal is manufactured through a precise and controlled process. A sheet of metal, typically steel, aluminum, or stainless steel, is subjected to a series of slits or cuts using specialized machinery. These cuts are strategically positioned to allow the metal to expand when pressure is applied, creating openings or holes in the sheet. The expanded metal is then flattened to achieve the desired thickness and dimensions. This manufacturing process leads to a three-dimensional, mesh-like structure with a range of benefits.

Advantages of Expanded Metal for Walkways

1. Slip Resistance:

One of the most significant advantages of using expanded metal for walkways is its exceptional slip resistance. The expanded pattern creates a textured surface with raised portions, which provides a strong grip underfoot. This is especially important in areas where the walkways may be exposed to moisture, oils, or other slippery substances. The slip-resistant nature of expanded metal significantly reduces the risk of accidents and enhances overall safety for pedestrians.

2. Drainage Capability:

Another noteworthy feature of expanded metal walkways is their efficient drainage capability. The open design of the expanded pattern allows liquids, debris, and even snow to pass through the mesh. This prevents water from pooling on the surface and reduces the chances of slips caused by wet conditions. The efficient drainage also contributes to the longevity of the walkway by preventing water-related damage and deterioration.

3. Durability and Longevity:

Expanded metal is renowned for its durability and resilience. The process of expanding the metal sheet strengthens it, making it resistant to impact, wear, and corrosion. This durability ensures that expanded metal walkways can withstand heavy foot traffic, mechanical stress, and environmental elements without deteriorating quickly. As a result, they have a longer lifespan compared to traditional walkway materials.

4. Low Maintenance:

The rugged nature of expanded metal walkways translates into low maintenance requirements. The open mesh design prevents debris from accumulating on the surface, minimizing the need for frequent cleaning. Additionally, the durability of expanded metal means that it can endure continuous use without significant wear and tear, reducing the need for repairs or replacements.

5. Versatility and Customization:

Expanded metal walkways offer versatility in design and customization. The manufacturing process allows for a variety of patterns, opening sizes, and materials, enabling designers to tailor the walkway to specific requirements. This flexibility ensures that expanded metal walkways can be adapted to various applications and architectural aesthetics.

6. Cost-Effectiveness:

In the long run, expanded metal walkways prove to be cost-effective solutions. Their durability and low maintenance needs result in reduced lifecycle costs compared to alternatives that may require frequent repairs or replacements. Additionally, the slip resistance and safety enhancements they offer contribute to minimizing the risk of accidents and potential associated liabilities.
